Preparing for Half Marathon....

Training. Preparing for Half Marathon Training.
I have less then 2 weeks to go until I begin my training.
I have a list of things I need to do.

1. Find a training plan.
I'm indecisive. So that kind of makes it hard to pick a plan that I really like. I know I want a plan that allows me to train for atleast 12 weeks and one that includes a long run of 11 or 12 miles. I know a lot of them usually just go up to a long run of 10 miles. Nope I prefer 13 but I'll settle for 11 or 12 and then I know I'll feel more comfortable when the big day arrives.

2. Get a GPS enabled watch.
This is something I've been in search for for over a month. I think I want the Garmin Forerunner 310xt but the verdict is still out on that. I know I want a watch that DOES MORE THEN just tell me distance, calories burned, and pace. If I had endless funds, I would probably get the Garmin Forerunner 910. But yeah who has $400+ to spare? If you do... my birthday was last month. Not to late for a gift :)

3. New running shoes.
It's about that time again. My shoes aren't done yet but probably about half way thru training I will need new ones. I know I want Brook's or Mizuno's. Need to go to one of the running specialty stores soon.

4. Get a running belt.
I don't have time to hide water bottles out along my route and I don't like running with a huge 20oz bottle in my hand. So I need to get a hydration belt. Suggestions anyone?? Something reasonably price, durable, and comfortable!

5. Come up with strength training schedule.
I've decided I want to incorporate 2 days of full body strength training workouts while I'm training. Therefore I'll be able to maintain my muscle and hopefully burn fat more quickly!

6. Get samples of different energy snacks (for during and pre run).
I'm nervous about this. Finding out which foods work for me pre run, during, and post run. Pre and post run I know for shorter runs but don't know if these are the best for the longer ones. Also I'm not looking forward to training new foods for during my run for fear that it might not sit well with my stomach and all my runners know that's never fun when you tummy starts bubbling. What are some of your favorite during a long run snacks?

7. Music
Self explanatory. I love music that keeps me motivated and pushing! Bonus if it keeps my mind off the fact that I'm running 13.1 miles.

My non scale victory this week is focusing on my half marathon training and not on the negative things like my body fat not being where I wanted it to be. I'm taking that energy and refocusing it on something that will bring so much joy in my life. Running my first half marathon. :)
Also as much as I want to quit Livefit Trainer. Every day I am still managing to push myself to do that day's workout!

  1. Thats great that you are focusing on a positive rather than a negative! I wish I could help you with the other things, but unfortunately I'm no help with any of it!! Ha ha ha!!

  2. My fav during run fuel are Gatorade energy chews. They are awesome and you can find them at any grocery store. I used to eat sports beans, but they became too hard to find. Im going to start adding mini pretzel sticks too. During a really long run, Im always wishing for something savory. I think pretzels will do the trick.

I hear the Garmin watch has training programs already on it. It helps keep you on pace or target heart rate. So if you invest in one, you can solve numbers 1 and 2 on your list.

For the others, find a race that is coming up near you and go to the expo. There you can sample lots of different things, you can find a great fuel belt and even have your gait checked at a booth (if its a somewhat larger race). The best thing about buying product from the expo is that you can negotiate. You don't like the price? You can talk them down. You'll be surprised at how many folks are willing to deal.

    good luck!

    1. Thank you sooooo much!! Awesome tips! Especially abt finding an expo. I don't think there are any soon near me though :(. The major races with expos r usually at disney and I don't think they have a big race until Nov maybe October. I know someone who say they use regular jelly beans! I want to try the sports one though and I well look into the gatorade ones!

  3. Tone It Up has a training plan but I don't remember how long the long run is. But you might want to check it out.

Instick my phone inside of my Clipbelt or SpiBelt and use that instead of a Garmin. I don't have $400 either. LOL
